In the past few years, the need for energy has increased in south-central Kansas. Recent studies of the transmission system have identified the need for a new power line connecting a substation southwest of Conway Springs with one northwest of Clearwater. A new line, which may also include rebuilding part of an existing line, between these two substations will help keep electricity in your area and south-central Kansas reliable.
This map shows the final, selected route for the new power line in red. The initial estimated investment for the project is $78 million.
The route has to be determined before our engineers can determine the right structure types to use, but the structures will likely be:
Westar contracted with outside experts to perform an evaluation of the area between the substations. This evaluation was intended to minimize adverse impacts to residents, their land, and the natural environment while providing a technically viable and cost-effective transmission line route. Potential routes were developed by defining routes that would technically work and then looking for those that minimize social and environmental impacts and are economically reasonable. Input received from residents in the area also helped us determine the final selected route.
We thank you for your interest in the project. Zach Timmons is available to help you as your dedicated Westar representative for this project. You may reach him at (316) 299-7164 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
