Topeka, Kan., Feb. 10, 2016 – As Westar Energy grows its commitment to renewable energy, it is also making green energy available to other utilities it serves on a wholesale basis.
“For a decade, Westar has been leading the investment in Kansas green energy,” said John Bridson, senior vice president, generation and marketing. “Westar will be supplying neighboring Kansas utilities with renewable energy at attractive prices that would not otherwise be available to them. By sharing our buying power, we’re able to help others be even greener in serving their customers, too. These agreements help move our state toward a more modern power supply benefitting everyone.”
With recently announced wind farms, Westar Energy’s renewable energy portfolio will be more than 1700 megawatts; producing enough green energy annually to meet a third of our retail customers’ needs.
“Westar customers – wholesale and retail – are receiving more green energy at some of the best prices available in the market,” Bridson said.
Westar has reached agreements with Midwest Energy, McPherson Board of Public Utilities, City of Sabetha, City of Chanute and City of Iola to purchase green energy from the Kingman Wind Farm, which is expected to begin production in about a year. These agreements include full-service, energy-management.
