TOPEKA, Kan., Jan. 13, 2014 — Westar Energy Chief Executive Officer Mark Ruelle announced today that utility veteran Michel’ Cole will join the Westar Energy executive team Feb. 17 as vice president, corporate communications and public affairs.
For close to 30 years, Cole has been instrumental in helping organizations connect with their customers and other constituencies through communications and brand management. She has played a key role in public relations, corporate communications and philanthropic strategy for a variety of organizations including Goodyear, Fleishman-Hillard, Westar Energy, where she previously worked for 10 years as communications director, and most recently Security Benefit Corporation, where she served as vice president, corporate communications and brand strategy.
“Michel brings leadership experience from one of our community’s most respected companies, Security Benefit, as well as here at Westar Energy,” said Ruelle. “She has a keen understanding of the importance of relationships between companies and the communities they serve.”
An active volunteer, Cole serves on the board of trustees for Topeka Collegiate School and the advisory boards for the Kansas Book Festival and KTWU Public Television. Cole is an accredited business communicator through the International Association of Business Communicators, and is a graduate of the Leadership Greater Topeka and Leadership Kansas City programs. She is a graduate of Washburn University with a bachelor’s degree in communications. She is a native of Topeka, where she currently resides with her husband and two sons.
