Westar Energy

SmartBuilt Plus Energy Efficiency Requirements

Requirements:

1. HEATING AND COOLING - The "EFFICIENCY SMART" HOME

Will be heated and cooled with an energy efficient 15 SEER or higher full heat pump system.

  • It will be controlled by a multistage set back thermostat

  • Air distribution design will meet standards set forth by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers.

2. WATER HEATING

The water will be heated with a high efficiency electric water heater.

  • Minimum of 50 gallon capacity.

  • Minimum 4500 watt heating unit.

  • Water line piping will be insulated where necessary.

3. INSULATION

The minimum insulation requirements to be met include:

  • R-19 insulation in floors over unconditioned spaces.

  • Rigid stem wall insulation and vapor barrier on ground in crawl space.

  • 2" perimeter insulation for slab construction.

  • R-19 rim joist insulation in basement.
  • .
  • R-13 total wall outside wall insulation (includes exterior insulation board if utilized).

  • R-38 insulation in ceilings.

  • 2" insulation on duct work in an unconditioned space.

  • All duct work connections to be sealed with high grade metal tape or mastic.

  • Double pane windows or equivalent.

  • Weatherization measures including appropriate caulking, weather stripping, and poly-sealing-rough openings.

At least 1 or more of following building practices implemented:

  • OUTSIDE WALLS UTILIZE: Blown Cellulose or fiberglass wet or dry, Polly-Foam filling exterior wall cavities or Concrete using 2" expanded styrene as forms for ABOVE & BELOW GRADE walls or equivalent properties.

  • VARIABLE SPEED AIR HANDLED W/ 15 SEER HEAT PUMP

  • HIGHER EFFICIENT ELECTRIC WATER HEATING - Utilizing Solar panel with electric water heater or Water Heater Heat Pump.

  • LIGHTING: All recessed lights shall be in a self contained fixture with a zero clearance rating with a solid box covering the fixture if it is exposed in the attic. In addition, builder will provide CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) bulbs for 25% of the lighting needs.

  • ZERO EMISSIONS REFRIGERANT - Heat pump utilizes R-410 refrigerant. It is also controlled with a set back thermostat.
