Craft Scholarship Programs

Westar Energy Craft Scholarships are available to individuals who wish to pursue an associate degree in electric power and distribution in Kansas.

Craft Scholarship Awards

  • Award Amount: $2,000
  • One general Lineman Scholarship
  • One female Lineman Scholarship
  • One Power Plant Operator Scholarship


Why pursue a degree in electric power and distribution or power plant technology?

  • Starting salary for lineman apprentice: $45,000
  • Starting salary for power plant operator: $44,000
  • Potential opportunities for advancement



Line Worker Scholarships




Number of Scholarships Available:

  • One general Line Worker Scholarship
  • One female Line Worker Scholarship (if applicable)


Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a Kansas resident
  • Must be a graduating High School Senior or equivalent or recent High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Must pursue a degree in Electric Power and Distribution in Kansas
  • Must be eligible to obtain a Commercial Drivers License
  • Must enroll as a full-time student in a degree program (does not have to be enrolled prior to scholarship award, but must be a full-time student in degree program to receive award
  • Must maintain 2.5 G.P.A. during degree program
  • If 18, must be willing to submit to a Motor Vehicle Records Check (drug free with no DUI convictions)


Program Selection Process:
Consideration for a Line Worker Scholarship will be given to applicants who:

  • Submit a completed application and essay by March 17, 2012.
  • If selected, attend one of the mandatory two day Climbing Camps
  • Complete a Job Fit Survey (given during camp)
  • Participate in a personal interview (given during camps)


Program Benefits:

  • Access to a professional mentor through the Ellis Foundation and Westar Energy
  • Opportunity for direct placement into technical school program (restrictions may apply)
  • Opportunity for internship and future employment with Westar Energy


Camp Dates: May 5 to 6, 2012 or May 12 to 13, 2012.

Camp Location: Professional Development Center, Topeka, KS.

Power Plant Operator Scholarships




Number of Scholarships Available:

  • One general Power Plant Operator Scholarship


Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a Kansas resident
  • Must be a graduating High School Senior or equivalent or recent High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Must pursue a degree in Power Plant Technology in Kansas
  • Must enroll as a full-time student in a degree program (does not have to be enrolled prior to scholarship award, but must be a full-time student in degree program to receive award
  • Must maintain 2.5 G.P.A. during degree program


Program Selection Process:
Consideration for a Power Plant Operator Scholarship will be given to applicants who:

  • Submit a completed application and essay by March 17, 2012.
  • If selected, attend the mandatory two day Skills Test Camp
  • Complete a Job Fit Survey and CADI Testing (given during camp)
  • Participate in a personal interview (given during camps)

Winners will be announced at the end of May. Students must be able to attend on of the camp dates in order to be eligible for a scholarship.

Scholarship Administration is performed by The Ellis Foundation.
