K-4 Lesson Plans
Powerpedia Presentation
- Half-hour presentations provided by knowledgeable staff on how to save energy and why it's important.
- Includes a DVD and demonstration of efficiency concepts and concludes with a question-and-answer session.
- Home Energy Vampire demonstration teaches students where energy is often wasted at home.
- Materials are given to students to take home for hands-on learning.
Take Home Materials
- After the Home Energy Vampire demonstration, each student is also given removable stickers for adhering to his or her home's devices as a reminder to turn things off when not in use.
- Energy Saver Diaries are distributed to the entire class. The diaries help students keep track of ways they practiced saving energy for one week.
- Students who complete their Energy Saver Diary and return it to the teacher will be entered in a drawing for a free home energy saving kit.

Powerpedia Presentation
- Hands-on energy efficiency lesson.
- A meter box display visually demonstrates the amount of energy used by light bulbs and different small appliances and shows students what is meant by "phantom load."
- Students watch a DVD about how electricity is made and are given a hands-on energy efficiency experiment book.
Take Home Materials
- Home energy assessment materials are distributed to the entire class during the Powerpedia classroom presentations.
- Students who complete their Home Energy Assessment booklet and enter their scores on the Westar Energy website will be entered in a drawing for a free home energy saving kit.

9-12 Lesson Plans
Powerpedia Presentation
- Students receive a classroom presentation that includes a demonstration of the "human power generator".
- By hand-cranking a generator, students see how much energy it takes to light an incandescent bulb compared to a CFL or an LED bulb.
- Each student is also given a take-home energy assessment and asked to rate his or her home's energy efficiency.
- Returning to class with the completed assessment, students then go online and plug in their answers to learn how energy efficient their home is or isn't.
