Summer Energy Bills
Summer electric bills are primarily higher for two key reasons:
1. Energy consumption is higher because of air-conditioner use.
2. It costs Westar more to generate electricity during the summer and those costs are passed along to consumers.

Actual usage
Why does it cost Westar more to produce electricity in the summer?
To meet high summer peak demand for electricity, Westar relies on peaking natural gas fired power plants. It generally costs more to produce electricity with natural gas and those charges are passed along to consumers. Learn more about the fuel charge.
Summer Energy Savings Tips
As you can see in the graph above, summer usage is about double that of non-summer usage. Air-conditioning accounts for approximately 50% of your electric bill during the hot summer months.
- Reduce the time spent with doors and windows open when you are running the air conditioner.
- Increase daytime thermostat, maintaining a 78 to 80 degree Fahrenheit temperature. If you do not have a programmable thermostat, consider installing one. Find out how you can receive a free thermostat from Westar Energy.
- Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). CFLs use one-fourth the energy and don't put off near as much heat as incandescents.
- Use the microwave instead of the oven when cooking, or consider grilling outdoors. (The less heat added to your home from using appliances makes it easier on your air conditioner.)
- Close curtains and blinds on south and west facing windows, especially in the afternoon.
- If you have a second refrigerator in the garage, consider getting rid of it altogether, or at least moving it to the basement. A garage fridge has to work overtime in the heat of summer to keep food and beverages cool.
