Downed Power Line Safety

It is common for a power line to come down during severe storms or due to public damage, such as vehicle or construction equipment accidents. Many times outages can be extended due to safety issues. These outages often affect a large number of customers.

It is important to keep electric safety in mind if you are involved in a vehicular crash around power lines or if lines are down around you due to a storm.

Downed Power Line Safety

  • If a power line is down, call 1-800 LIGHT KS (1-800-544-4857) and 911 immediately.

  • Don’t touch the line, always assume it is live.

  • If you see someone touching a downed line, don’t try to rescue them. You could become a victim yourself.

  • If a power line falls on your car while you’re in it, stay in your car and wait for help. You are safe as long as you remain inside. If you must exit the car, jump, be careful not to touch the car and ground at the same time.
