Westar Energy to expand wind energy portfolio

Westar Energy announced today that it plans to add 369 megawatts of wind energy to its renewable energy resource portfolio.

Renewable energy

• Westar is currently one of the top utilities in the nation for renewable energy per customer.


• Westar currently has three wind farms in Kansas totaling 295 megawatts (MW).


• Westar also has 6 MW of renewable energy from its Rolling Meadows Landfill Gas Plant.


• Westar plans to have an additional 369 MW in service by end of year 2012.

• Central Plains Wind Farm - 99 MW facility in Leoti, Kansas (Owned by Westar).


• Flat Ridge Wind Farm - 100 MW facility near Nashville, Kansas (Purchase Power Agreement/Owned).


• Meridian Way Wind Farm - 96 MW facility near Concordia, Kansas. (Purchase Power Agreement)

Wind Farms in development

• Post Rock Wind Farm - 201 MW facility in Ellsworth and Lincoln counties (Purchase Power Agreement).


• Ironwood Windpower Project - 168 MW facility in Ford and Hodgeman counties (Purchase Power Agreement).
