As crews are working to restore power following this week’s storms, we are seeing a few common themes or questions and wanted to provide answers. If you have another question, submit it to corpcomm@westarenergy.com.

I’ve seen Westar vehicles in my neighborhood, but my power isn’t being restored. Why?

We have pulled personnel from departments in the company to walk through neighborhoods to assess damage. They report back so that when line crews are sent out they know what repairs are needed and have the right equipment with them so their time is dedicated to getting the lights back on.

Is an estimate available for when my power will be back on?

We do not have estimates for specific areas of town or neighborhoods. We prioritize work to remedy dangerous situations and then to restore power to public safety facilities. Once that work is complete our goal is to restore power to the greatest number of customers first. (Power restoration process) If you observe that only a few homes or businesses around you are without power, it is likely that it may toward the end of the restoration work when we are getting your power back on.

Why is it taking so long?

Winds in this storm exceeded 70 mph and did extensive damage. For every dot on the map below, at least one repair has to be made. This may be clearing a tree limb from a line, replacing a transformer, resetting a power pole or restringing a power line. Bottom line it means that restoration takes time. We have brought in 400 people from outside areas to work on storm restoration in the Topeka area. As storm restoration is completed in other areas, we are bringing more people into Topeka to help out.
