Wind Generation

Renewable energy will play an important part of Westar Energy's fuel mix for years to come.

It's important to remember that wind energy can only be harnessed when the wind is available. As a result, we have found a good strategy is to back up wind generation with natural gas peaking plants.

Example of how the wind doesn't always blow.

Westar Energy's load curve on a hot summer day.

Wind Farm Output for July 19, 2006 at two separate wind farms.
July 19, 2006 set a new record demand for system-wide peak usage.

Wind generation accompanied with natural gas peaking plants will help to prolong the building of a new baseload generating facility (coal or nuclear).

A baseload generating facility is one that is available to provide a steady flow of electricity regardless of conditions. Under current technology, wind energy is not able to replace a baseload facility.

Current forecasts show that the demand for electricity is steadily rising and we will need to add an additional baseload facility around 2014.
