High Bill

Why are my bills more in the summer?

Summer electric bills are higher for two key reasons:
1. Energy consumption is higher because of air-conditioner use.
2. It costs Westar more to generate electricity during the summer and those costs are passed along to consumers.

Actual usage

Why does it cost Westar more to produce electricity in the summer?
To meet high summer peak demand for electricity, Westar relies on peaking natural gas fired power plants. Cost of natural gas and higher cost to transport coal resulted in higher fuel costs last summer.

What can I do to save energy and keep my electric bills down?
As you can see in the graph above, summer usage is about double that of non-summer usage. Air-conditioning accounts for approximately half of your electricity bill during the hot summer months.

  • Westar recommends a thermostat setting of 78 degrees during summer months.
  • Have air-conditioners and heat-pumps serviced, change the filter once a month or as needed.
  • Ceiling fans and portable fans do not use much electricity and can make a room seem much cooler.
  • Close vents to unoccupied rooms.
  • Close window shades and curtains on sun exposed windows.
  • Minimize heat inside by grilling outdoors and using the microwave instead of the oven or stove.

Average payment plan can help your monthly bills remain consistent.
