| Dog Bite Prevention |

We've had several recent incidents where dogs have bitten meter readers. On days your meter is read, please take care to contain your dog. We want to accurately read your meter and keep our employees safe.
Generally, the date that we will be out to read your meter is the due date on your monthly bill. To print a list of dates your meter is read, sign in to my electric account and click on "meter reading schedule".
How to be a responsible dog owner
- Obedience training can teach dogs proper behavior and help owners control their dogs.
- When a meter reader or other field personnel comes to your home, keep your dog inside, away from the door and in another room.
- Spay or neuter your dog. Neutered dogs are less likely to bite. Statistics from the Humane Society show that dogs that have not been spayed or neutered are up to three times more likely to bite.
- Dogs that receive little attention or handling, or are tied up for long periods of time frequently turn into biters.

How to avoid being bitten
- Don't run past a dog. The dog's natural instinct is to chase and catch prey.
- If a dog threatens you, don't scream, Avoid eye contact.
- Try to remain motionless until the dog leaves, then back away slowly until the dog is our of sight.
- Don't approach a strange dog, especially one that's tethered or confined.
- Don't pet.
- If you believe a dog is about to attack you, try to place something between you and the dog, such as a purse, a backpack or other object.

Westar Energy provides safe and reliable service to all customers. Obtaining electric service from Westar Energy is conditioned on our customer’s agreement to the General Terms and Conditions set out in the KCC approved tariff for our entire service area.
If our meter readers and other field personnel are prevented from entering any customer’s property to read the meter or gain access to other Westar Energy electric facilities, those preconditions for service stated in Section 5.01 have been violated. Whenever a real or perceived dangerous condition exists on the customer’s premise – such as when a customer’s dog/s are loose and appear to be a threat to the employee’s safety – Westar is allowed in such circumstance to immediately discontinue or refuse to provide electric service to that customer.
Any breed and size of dog can become volatile, temperamental, and capable of causing injury to our employees, whom dogs perceive as strangers on the customer’s premises. We want to accurately read your meter and keep our employees safe.
