Transmission

Westar Energy operates and maintains 7,700 miles of transmission lines and about 27,800 miles of distribution lines providing reliable electricity to more than 675,000 retail and more than 70 wholesale customers.

Since 1997, Westar Energy has operated its transmission system in accordance with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission orders 888 and 889 to allow open access to its transmission system by all eligible wholesale customers. These orders required Westar Energy to functionally separate its power marketing group from its transmission operations group by following a set of rules called the Standard of Conduct.

In June 1998, Westar Energy joined with 13 other transmission providers to offer regional transmission service under a tariff that is administered by the Southwest Power Pool (SPP). The SPP tariff offers point-to-point and network service across parts of Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana.
