It's nearly Halloween... and vampires are lurking everywhere!
Energy vampires, that is. Energy vampires are electronic appliances that are constantly using energy - even when they're off or in standby mode. Everyday items like TVs, cell phone chargers, stereos, computers, suck energy and waste your money.
Stop these energy vampires by turning them all the way off when you're through using them. This often means unplugging them from the outlet. This works especially well with small appliances like CD players, toothbrushes or cell phone chargers.
Better yet, purchase a power strip for electronic appliances in close proximity, i.e., your TV/DVD/DVR equipment or your computer equipment. Plug your computer, printer, modem, fax and/or phone on the same power strip. Then, when you're not using them, turn off the power strip to cut power to all the appliances in one simple step.
There are even special power strips on the market now, called smart power strips, that can sense when you've turned off one of the main components and will automatically shut down everything else. Look for them at your local home improvement or discount store.
Avoid energy vampires by replacing old appliances with new Energy Star-rated equipment. The types of items that can earn the Energy Star designation include TVs, computers, washing machines, automatic dishwashers, refrigerators and ceiling fans, to name just a few.
The simple steps above can help you scare away the energy vampires all year long! |
Tips for the heating season
Turn your thermostat down five degrees. Each degree saves about 2% on your heating bill. So, five degrees might save about $100 on a $1,000 average annual heating bill.
Have a professional inspect your furnace. Check the filters each month. Clear the area around your furnace to improve airflow. Make sure heat can get into a room by not blocking registers or return air vents with furniture or drapes.
If you must use a space heater, use one that meets the latest safety standards. Use a space heater in an open area, on a level surface, at least three feet away from any flammable items. Turn off the space heater when you leave the room or go to sleep.
