Do you leave your computer on overnight?

Many homes now have multiple computers. Computers continue to multiply as they become the family's entertainment and business centers.

If the computer set-up (computer, monitor, printer, modem, etc.) uses 300 watts for 4 hours per day at $.7 per kWh, that's about $30 annually (not bad).

If you leave that same computer on 24 hours a day 7 days a week, then the figure climbs to about $180 annually. Now consider that cost multiplied by several computers throughout the household and you can see how the bill adds up.

If you are going to leave your computer on overnight, make sure that "sleep" or "hibernate" modes are enabled. Sleep mode still draws a small amount of power, but significantly less than if the computer is on.

The best practice is to turn the computer off if you're not going to be using it within a short amount of time (about 30 minutes). Turning the computer off is also a good practice if you have an always-on internet connection (cable, DSL).
