Environmental Air Quality

Westar Energy is subject to the Clean Air Act, which includes the Acid Rain Program, Title V Operating Permits Program and Stratospheric Ozone Protection Program. Westar Energy has dedicated considerable resources to ensure compliance with these and other Clean Air-related programs.

Westar Energy has recently replaced the data acquisition and handling system (DAHS) software and hardware for our continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMs) for all energy center stacks. CEMs are used to track and record regulated mass and visible emissions from

Westar Energy’s operations. By tracking the emissions of regulated pollutants, Westar Energy is able to ensure continual compliance with the acid rain program and other Clean Air Act-related programs. By continuing to update and enhance our CEMs, Westar Energy is able to more accurately determine the release of regulated pollutants in the environment.

Westar Energy’s energy centers are operating under Kansas-issued Title V Operating Permits. A Title V Operating Permit contains all the terms and conditions of air regulatory programs in one concise document. Westar Energy has developed many procedures to meet the monitoring and record-keeping requirements of these permits.
