Energy Efficiency - "Colwich Switch"

Westar Energy is conducting an energy usage study with the residents of the small town of Colwich, Kansas, located near Wichita.

In August 2008, each household in Colwich was given six compact fluorescent light bulbs along with energy efficiency information. Residents were strongly encouraged to switch out their incandescent light bulbs and install the six CFLs, as well as practice energy saving habits like setting thermostats at comfortable energy efficient levels of 78 degrees in the summer and 68 degrees in the winter.

Weatherization tips were distributed, and residents receive a quarterly letter from Westar with an update on how their home is doing when it comes to energy efficiency. Each letter gives the percentage increase or decrease that that particular household has realized in the last three months.

The results so far from the Colwich Switch reveal that year-to-date overall residential electric usage has dropped nearly 2.5% in the nine months since the project began in August 2008. Westar will announce final results of the Colwich Switch in September 2009 during a special event with Colwich residents.
