Westar Energy constructed and is operating a natural gas-fired combustion turbine peaking plant in a rural area of Lyon County.
- The first 300 megawatts (MW) came online in May 2008. An additional 365 MW came online in the Spring of 2009.
- Peaking power plants are intended to operate during our highest customer demand conditions, primarily on the hottest summer days. It is also intended to help the company meet system growth demands.
- The total investment in the plant was about $308 million, about $10 million less than originally projected. The new plant increases the assessed valuation of the tax base by more than $50.0 million or 24%.
- Westar Energy selected the Lyon County site based on several criteria including the availability of natural gas, environmental impact, transmission access and community support.
- The project provides clean, reliable electric power with minimal environmental impacts, and offer benefits to the local area.
