Westar Energy recognizes the value of volunteers to the communities we serve and to the company. Community Partners rewards retired and active Westar Energy employees and their spouses who volunteer.

In 2008, Westar Energy's Community Partners program donated:
  • $47,100 to nonprofit organizations on behalf of active and retired employees and their spouses who have volunteered 100 hours or more.
  • 425 participants donated more than 88,176 volunteer hours.
  • Donated $1.72 million of in-kind contributions to those agencies served by volunteer efforts.
  • 271 participants logged in at least 100 hours throughout the year and received $100 to donate to a nonprofit organization of their choice.
  • For every 50 hours above 100, volunteers’ names were entered into drawings for additional money to be donated to an organization at the end of the year.
  • Twenty nine employees, retirees or spouses were able to donate these additional dollars to their organizations.
About the program:
  • The program began in 1998 with participants recording about 12,000 volunteer hours for local community causes.
  • Participants donate their time to organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, United Way, Meals on Wheels, food pantries and area schools and children’s camps.
