Jeffrey Energy Center Wildlife History

  • JEC, completed in 1983, is fueled by abundant, cleanburning Powder River Basin coal.

  • About 20 percent of JEC's initial cost was for systems specifically designed to safeguard the environment. The company's ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship is reflected in the development and maintenance of the wildlife management areas at JEC.

  • Over the past several years, a large percentage of the land surrounding JEC has been enhanced for the benefit of public recreation and fish and wildlife populations in a cooperative effort by Westar Energy and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP). The general public, as well as company employees, their families and friends are encouraged to visit.

  • JEC places a high value on youth environmental education. At the beginning of deer, turkey and dove season, volunteers for Westar's Green Team generally conduct youth hunts for first-time hunters. During these events, the general public is excluded. All youth interested must contact Green Team coordinator, Brad Loveless, by E-mail or call him at (785) 575-8115 and be accepted prior to the season's start.
