Energy Savings with Office Equipment

Office equipment is the fastest growing use of electricity in United States commercial buildings and among the fastest in residential homes.

Office equipment that is left on overnight or for long periods during the day when not in use accounts for a large share of office electricity use.

The single best thing you can do is turn off machines and equipment when not in use.

Energy Saving Office Tips
    • Turn off PCs, monitors, printers and copiers nightly and on weekends. If unable to switch off a computer, turn off the monitor and printer. Don't use screen savers.
    • If possible, use a laptop instead of a desktop. A laptop will consume about 1/10 the energy of a desktop.
    • An ink-jet printer consumes 90 percent less energy than a laser printer.
    • When buying new office equipment, consider purchasing EnergyStar products that use a power-saving mode when not in use.

Common Misconceptions
    • Many people believe that equipment last longer if never turned off. This is incorrect and carries over from the old mainframe computer days.
    • Many people also believe that screen savers reduce energy use by monitors, they do not. Sleep mode or manually turning off your monitor is a much better alternative.

EnergyStar Resources

If every home office product purchased in the U.S. this year were EnergyStar qualified, Americans would save $200 million in annual energy costs.
