Energy Savings Tips

Summer is right around the corner and that means higher bills. Below are a number of tips to keep your bill from going through the roof.

Air-Conditioning
    • Service the air-conditioning unit. Consider an annual maintenance contract with a local heating and cooling vendor.
    • Set thermostat at 78 degrees. After hours raise the temperature a couple degrees, consider a programmable thermostat system
    • Block direct sunlight if possible. Direct sunlight adds heat and can make the air-conditioner work harder.
    • Don't cool unused office space, consider ceiling fans or large industrial fans in warehouse applications.
Turn off...
    • Computers: Turn off the monitor when away for more than 15 minutes. Turn off your computer, monitor and accessories every night when you go home.
    • Lights: Always turn off lights to unoccupied areas and task lights as not needed. Make sure someone is in charge of turning out lights at the end of the day. Consider motion sensor lights that automatically turn off and on when a room is occupied.
    • Appliances: Always turn off portable heaters/fans when not in use. Turn off all coffee pots, radios and other office gadgets that consume electricity. Assign someone to turn off office equipment such as printers at the close of business.
    • Educate: Educate and challenge employees to save energy at the office; the way they save at home when they have to pay the bill.
Turn down...
    • Lighting: Many areas have too much lighting. Use only needed light and use only partial lighting during non-business hours.
    • Heating and Cooling: Westar recommends a summer thermostat setting of 78 degrees and a winter setting of 68 degrees.
