Westar applies for smart grid funding

Westar Energy has applied with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for up to $20 million in funding under the Smart Grid Investment Grant program. The company's application calls for development of a smart grid concept town in Lawrence, Kansas. Called "SmartStar Lawrence," the project will include installation of "smart" meters, interactive web access, technology enhancements and improved service in Lawrence.

The project is estimated to cost a total of $40 million and is contingent on DOE approval of funding for half of it, about $20 million.

KDHE approves Westar Energy greenhouse gas report

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has approved Westar's report on mitigation of greenhouse gases. "We acknowledge that a carbon constrained future is likely and that the time has come to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, so we're pleased that KDHE approved our report," said Bill Moore, Westar president and CEO.

"While technology to reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuel power plants is still in research and development, in light of lawmakers and regulators developing climate change policy, we are doing things like building renewable energy resources and pursuing energy efficiency as the first, most cost effective step to mitigate GHG emissions.

Westar truck fleet reducing diesel emissions

The KDHE will provide funding to retrofit several of the company's line trucks with improved diesel emissions equipment. The KDHE recently received a $4 million grant under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program. Of that, Westar Energy will receive about $200,00 for this project.

About 70 line trucks will be retrofitted with diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC), which reduce diesel emissions. Installation of the DOCs has begun and should be fully complete on all 70 trucks by 2010.
